THE FALLS (PG)
Wed 22 Oct
Dir: Peter Greenaway. UK 1980. 195mins
Set in a strangely serene future after a ‘Violent Unknown Event’ (VUE), a mysterious apocalyptic occurrence that has left a substantial section of the British public speaking bizarre, invented languages, dreaming of water and identifying themselves with birds. Divided into 92 biographies of victims of the event whose names all begin with the letters F-A-L-L, Peter Greenaway’s first feature film is according to the director ‘a total travesty of the documentary tradition’.
(“THE FALLS is Moviedom’s answer to Tristram Shandy and you should fall over yourself to try and see it.” Nigel Andrews, FINANCIAL TIMES, 1980).
Presented by CINECITY and Film Hub South East in association with Folkestone Triennial 2014 as part of the BFI’s Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder
