First launched in 2006, Guiding Lights is the UK film industry’s leading mentoring programme. In 2014, Film Hub South East supported the introduction of an exhibition strand and the participation of three professionals from the exhibition sector in the South East.
The selected candidates benefitted from a 9-month mentorship with a leading expert in their field, and receive a bursary to support a work-shadowing placement. They were involved in other training activities facilitated by the programme, and become part of the Guiding Lights network. Further access to high-level filmmakers and business professionals was provided through an online facility.
Since its launch, Guiding Lights has supported the professional development of 100 talented filmmakers and industry professionals through high-level mentoring, complemented by a range of training and networking activities. Over the years, Guiding Lights mentors have included Danny Boyle, Barbara Broccoli, Sam Mendes, Clio Barnard, Tim Bevan, Sandra Hebron and many others. The scheme is run by Lighthouse, and supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, which is funded by the National Lottery via the BFI, and through the Skills Investment Fund. The participation of three exhibition professionals is the result of a partnership with Film Hub South East – part of the BFI Film Audience Network.
