Exhibition Industry Day: Brighton 2015

A big thank you to everyone who came along to our Exhibition Industry Day in November, bringing along such great energy and ideas to make the day a success.

The day had a thematic slant on audience development and widening access within film exhibition. We invited a selection of talented practitioners who presented some innovative and stimulating screening projects, all of which have centred around either screening film content that represents diverse and marginalised communities or which has actively engaged audiences from those communities.

We were lucky enough to have Coach, Writer and Presenter Gaylene Gould with us all day, to host and steer discussion in thought-provoking directions. Galyene spoke of cultural neglect and what it feels like to rarely see a positive representation of your cultural heritage on screen, as well as a warm and positive antidote to this.

Brighton_FHSE__0063Sarah Watson and Lizzie Banks talked to us about Oska Bright Film Festival and the activities they run throughout the year, and the important part it plays in developing a platform for films made by and with people with a learning disability

Paul Jackson from Legacy Film presented the Legacy Pop Up Cinema which provides positive representation in film for those of the African and Caribbean diaspora.

Brighton_FHSE__0022We were treated to an interactive presentation from Suzy Harvey, a professional performer who runs the fabulous Musical Matinee Club at De La Warr Pavillion. This is a programme of relaxed screenings specifically for adults with dementia.Brighton_FHSE__0037

Jacob Engelberg presented the work of Eyes Wide Open Cinema, a queer film strand based in Brighton and founded in 2013.

Brighton_FHSE__0110Cinema Consultant Julia Vickers facilitated an interactive exchange to help attendees develop projects and networks and identity future opportunities.

All in all it was a big success and as a result of the dialogue that took place, one of our members has started a new exhibitors networking group.  We’ve had some great feedback too:
